What is energy meditation?

A reference guide to the practices whose object of attention is energy itself, the definition, the family, the difficulty, and how to begin.

THE DEFINITION

Energy meditation is the family of meditation practices in which the object of attention is subtle energy itself, the life force known as qi, prana, or vital energy, rather than the breath, a mantra, an image, or open awareness.

Where breath meditation focuses on breathing and mantra meditation focuses on sound, energy meditation focuses on the felt presence of energy in and around the body.

Meditation is defined by its object

Every meditation practice gives the mind something to rest on. The traditions differ mostly in what that something is: the breath (breath meditation, anapanasati), a repeated sound (mantra meditation), a visual form (visualization practices), the moving body (walking meditation), or the field of awareness itself (open monitoring). Energy meditation belongs to this taxonomy as its own branch: the object is the subtle energy the contemplative traditions have described for millennia, and that the practitioner learns to perceive directly as warmth, pressure, density, and movement.

A note on a common confusion

“Energy meditation” is often confused with “meditation for energy” practices done in order to feel more energetic. They are different things. Meditation for energy names a benefit; energy meditation names an object of attention. This page concerns the latter: the class of practices in which energy itself is what you meditate on. (Feeling more energized is, admittedly, a frequent side effect.)

The family of energy meditations

Energy meditation is old and global. Qigong and neigong meditations focus on qi and its circulation. Yogic prana vidya trains perception and direction of prana through the subtle body. Chakra meditations focus on the body’s energy centers. What these share is the defining move: attention placed on energy as a felt reality, not a concept.

The difficulty, and the solution

The historical difficulty with energy meditation is bootstrapping: how do you rest attention on something you have not yet learned to feel? Many modern approaches answer with visualization, imagine the energy, which risks training imagination instead of perception. The sensation-first answer is to train felt perception before anything else, beginning with a concentrated, verifiable experience of energy between the hands, and building from there.

This is the approach pore breathing takes. Pore breathing is a systematic, sensation-first energy meditation: an energy meditation practice that combines breathwork and energywork for sensing and balancing life force energy in the human biofield, supporting physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Where other meditations focus on the breath, a mantra, or an image, pore breathing focuses on energy itself. The training begins with the energy ball, a felt object between the palms that responds to attention and position, and develops through whole-body practice into the four perspectives of energy meditation.

How to begin

Energy meditation begins with sensitivity, not belief. A first session takes about ten minutes: settle, form a sphere between the hands, rest attention in the space between the palms, and notice what is actually there. If the felt quality changes when you slowly vary the distance between your hands, you are perceiving, not imagining, imagination does not respond to the position of your hands.

Questions about the category

Is energy meditation the same as Reiki or energy healing?

No. Reiki is a healing modality performed on or for someone; energy meditation is a meditation practice, attention focused on energy for the practitioner’s own training and development.

Do I have to believe in energy?

No. The practice is built on sensation, not belief. If something is real, you will feel it; if it is not, belief will not make it so.

What is the easiest energy meditation for beginners?

A sensation-first practice with a concrete object, most commonly the energy ball between the hands, which gives immediate, verifiable feedback. Try it now →
