What is Pore Breathing?

Pore breathing is an energy meditation practice that combines breathwork and energywork for sensing and balancing life force energy in the human biofield, supporting physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Where other meditations focus on the breath, a mantra, or an image, pore breathing focuses on energy itself.

How is it different from breathwork or pranayama?

Breathwork and pranayama work mainly through breathing patterns that shift oxygen, CO₂, and nervous-system regulation, producing temporary changes in state. Pore breathing shares that lineage but goes further, training direct awareness and regulation of subtle energy itself, through the whole surface of the body. It develops conscious engagement with vital energy independent of breathing mechanics. It doesn't replace breathwork; it deepens it.

Is it just visualization?

No. Many energy practices lead with visualization, and imagination tends to override perception before the body has learned to feel. Pore breathing reverses the order: sensation is trained first, warmth, pressure, density, subtle movement. Visualization enters later as a light support, and only ever directs what sensation has already confirmed is there. The body remains the verifier.

Do I need any prior experience?

None at all. Pore breathing is a foundation practice. Whether you're brand new to energy work or years into meditation, it meets you where you are and builds from direct sensation.

What is energy meditation?

Energy meditation is the family of meditation practices whose object of attention is subtle energy itself, rather than the breath, a mantra, or an image. Pore breathing is a systematic, sensation-first energy meditation. Read the full definition →

Is this the same “pore breathing” as in chemistry?

No. “Pore breathing” is also a term in materials chemistry, describing how metal-organic frameworks expand and contract as they absorb gases. This site concerns the meditation practice.

Is there a book?

Yes. Pore Breathing: Meditation, Breathwork, and Energywork for Everyone Who Ever Wondered If It Was Working by Æric Mahabīja is the complete written training, available in print and Kindle. It is also the course text for the full training. See the book →

What are Pore Activation Points (PAPs)?

Pore Activation Points are the active zones in the skin where energy absorption is most responsive. They are not fixed anatomical structures, they activate through use: as attention returns to the skin session after session, more of them come online and the body absorbs energy more efficiently. The term belongs to the pore breathing system; the full anatomy is taught in the book.

How long until I feel something?

Most people feel something in their very first session, tingling, warmth, or a sense of pressure and fullness. It is direct and immediate, not subtle and inferential. With regular practice, results deepen: more vitality, calmer emotions, clearer focus, and a growing ability to sense subtle energy.

How much time does it take each day?

Foundational practices can be done in 15–30 minutes a day. As you progress you may choose to expand your sessions, but even short, consistent daily practice creates real results. Consistency matters far more than intensity.

What is the energy ball?

The energy ball is the first formal practice, a concentrated sphere of life force formed between the hands. Because the focal point is outside the body, the senses come alive quickly. It's the moment most people describe as the conversion point: reading about energy becomes feeling it. You can try it now on the Start Here page.

What is the biofield?

The biofield is the unified human energy system that permeates and surrounds the body, its subtle layers, internal pathways, storage centers, and the electromagnetic field of the nervous system, heart, and tissues. Pore breathing approaches it not conceptually but through direct experience, as sensation, coherence, and presence. What the science establishes →

Can I direct the energy to specific parts of the body?

Yes. Once whole-body practice is established, vital energy follows awareness: place your attention in a tired region or an organ that needs support, and the breath delivers vital force there. The practice keeps the traditions’ safety rules intact, the heart and brain are never isolated as targets; they receive through ordinary whole-body circulation. This is a practice of self-cultivation, not a treatment for any condition.

Is Pore Breathing safe?

Yes. It is gentle, gradual, and self-paced. Unlike extreme breathwork, it doesn't stress the nervous system. You progress step by step, always working within your comfort, and grounding always comes before expansion. If you have a history of significant trauma or a medical or neurological condition, consult a qualified professional before beginning.

What if I don't feel anything at first?

That's normal and completely fine. Sensitivity is trained, not forced. Faint sensation is still sensation, a warmth in the palms or a thickness in the air is enough to build on. Move slowly, stay relaxed, and let the feeling collect attention naturally rather than hunting for it.

Can it be overdone?

The practice is designed so that stability leads. Progress is measured by coherence and integration into daily life, not by intensity or dramatic experiences. Because you expand only as fast as your foundation can hold, the practice self-regulates when approached as taught.

Where does pore breathing come from?

Pore breathing originates in the Western Hermetic tradition, the practice and its name come from the Hermetic lineage, with parallel teachings in the Taoist and Yogic energy arts. The principles the practice trains, energy absorbed through the whole body, stability before expansion, appear across the Taoist, Yogic, and Kabbalistic systems as well; pore breathing distills them into a single sensation-first method. The lineage →

What are SO, LAN, and CHA?

SO–LAN–CHA are the three universal currents of creation. SO (the Magnetic Principle) is the receptive, inward pole, stillness and potentiality. CHA (the Electric Principle) is the active, outward pole, impulse, radiation, and expression. LAN (the Harmonic Principle) is the balance and union of the two. Together they form a trinitized breath of creation: SO receives, CHA radiates, LAN unites. Explore SOLANCHA →

How does it fit into the SOLANCHA path?

Pore breathing is the foundation practice of SOLANCHA, a Hermetic philosophy of spiritual awakening and harmonious living. It awakens the energy in your body, emotions, and mind so you can live in balance with SO, LAN, and CHA, and eventually step into illumination. Explore SOLANCHA →

What are the three levels of training?

The curriculum moves through three levels: Human Biofield Mastery, Elemental Mastery, and the 3-Body Transformation (which contains the astral, mental, and Akashic work), followed by an optional teacher certification path. See the curriculum →
